Adjust Screen Brightness and Background Activity

Screen brightness remains one of the largest single drains on daily battery life, and it is also one of the easiest to control. Lowering brightness a few notches, combined with closing background applications that are not actively being used, can add a meaningful amount of runtime without requiring any changes to hardware or settings related to the battery itself.

Let the Battery Discharge Occasionally

While avoiding a constant full charge is helpful, so is avoiding a laptop that is never allowed to discharge at all. Letting the battery run down to a lower level occasionally, rather than immediately reaching for the charger at every small dip, helps keep the battery’s internal charge readings accurate over time, which affects how reliably it reports remaining life.

Store an Unused Laptop Properly

A laptop that will sit unused for weeks or months should generally be stored at a moderate charge level, not fully charged and not fully drained. Storing a battery at either extreme for long stretches tends to accelerate capacity loss, so a middle ground charge level before long term storage helps preserve capacity for whenever the laptop is used again.
